Thomas Jefferson’s new high school will feature an apiary

There’s a buzz at the new Thomas Jefferson High School — literally.

Over the hillside behind the school, surrounded by trees and brush and a six-foot fence, a bee apiary, with roughly 60,000 honey bees in four hives, sits waiting to educate students this fall.

The apiary is a rarity for a public high school in western Pennsylvania.

Once-thriving Clairton sits next to booming West Jefferson Hills. Their children are learning an early lesson on inequality.

Zion Rumble raced in disbelief through the hallways at Jefferson Elementary in the West Jefferson Hills School District. The hallways were wider, lockers bigger and there were multiple floors for just the elementary kids. Gadgets filled the STEAM lab; students have an art room and lots of bathrooms.

At Clairton Elementary, where Zion attended fifth grade, everything seems smaller, and they have less. The kids repeatedly talk about how the elementary art teacher position was cut, and the art room was turned into a music classroom. Kids now learn art in their other classes, while teachers are also trying to teach English and math.

West Jefferson Hills has ‘never seen anything like’ its 9 sets of kindergarten twins

Aria and Gianna Husrefovic each smile sweetly and give a little wave from their seats on the floor inside Melissa Wahl’s kindergarten classroom at McClellan Elementary.

It’s hard to tell the difference between the identical twins, whose outfits match perfectly down to the bows in their hair and scrunchies on their wrists.
